A separate Bondi project involving a merbau deck with an existing coating that needed to be removed evenly. The work focused on preparing the whole timber surface before applying the client’s chosen water-based Intergrain stain in Ebony.
Why the old coating was removed across the deck
Applying stain over a patchwork of old coating and bare timber can leave visibly uneven colour. For this project, the existing coating was mechanically stripped across the deck rather than removed only in isolated spots.
Protruding nails were set before the surface was worked. Sanding then removed the coating evenly and exposed the merbau underneath. The preparation photographs show the transition from the old finish to the bare timber surface.
This preparation was chosen for the condition and colour change involved in this deck. A future maintenance coat on another deck may call for a different approach after the timber and existing finish are assessed.
Ebony stain on prepared merbau
Once the old coating had been removed uniformly, the timber was finished with a water-based Intergrain stain in Ebony, the colour selected by the client.
Stain allows the timber surface to influence the finished appearance. Even preparation was therefore a central part of achieving a consistent result across the boards. The bare-timber and completed photographs show the change in colour.
The finished deck is a separate property and project from the Bondi Junction terrace repaint. Both are examples of our work within the wider Eastern Suburbs service area.
