Bondi Junction terrace
exterior painting

A complete exterior repaint of a terrace house in Bondi Junction, covering every side of the building together with timber and metal details. The work combined substantial cleaning and surface repairs with separate coating systems for rendered walls, timber and previously painted steel.

The finished photographs shown here were taken about two months after completion.

From algae and damaged render to a prepared surface

The exterior walls carried algae and accumulated dirt, with cracks and local areas of damaged render. Preparation began with chemical cleaning and pressure washing. Cleaning exposed the areas that needed further attention before painting.

Deeper cracks were opened to remove unsuitable material and allow repairs. Larger losses were re-rendered, while smaller defects were repaired with Selleys No More Cracks Exterior Brick & Render. Local gaps were treated where appropriate for the joint and surface. These repairs addressed the visible condition found during the work; a coating does not remove the cause of ongoing structural movement.

Protruding metal bolts were cut back. The exposed metal was treated with rust converter and a local epoxy primer before it was patched, helping reduce the risk of rust staining through the repaired surface.

A masonry primer and membrane finish

The prepared rendered walls received Dulux Acratex AcraPrime Solvent Based Clear, followed by two coats of Dulux Acratex AcraShield Advance Matt. The primer and finish formed the masonry coating system used for this project.

Surface repairs, sound preparation and the coating build all contributed to the finished appearance. The membrane finish covered fine surface cracking, while deeper defects were repaired beforehand. Cracks caused by ongoing building movement need separate assessment.

Timber and previously painted metalwork

Timber details were sanded, cleaned and patched where needed. An oil-based Zinsser/Rust-Oleum primer was used on the prepared areas, followed by Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss.

The steel had an existing paint finish and only local rust. It was thoroughly sanded, dusted and solvent-cleaned. Rusted areas were cleaned and treated with rust converter and an epoxy primer locally. Dulux Etch Primer was used in the metal preparation described for the project, with Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Gloss as the finish.

The local rust treatment and primer work depended on the condition of each area. They were not one universal stack of primers applied to every surface. The gloss finish brought definition back to the decorative metalwork.

The result and finishing details

The completed repaint brought the rendered walls, timber details and decorative railings together across the exterior. The completed views document the appearance approximately two months after the job. The timber photograph below records painting in progress.

We later returned to the clients for a small interior painting job. No additional interior photographs are included in this case study. For the broader service, read about our exterior house painting work.
